You are right, of course, and that even before you have met my Romy, the ever kittenish looking old lady who believes she is the Queen of Sheba and who occasionally rewards her slaves, us, with the present of some decapitated small mammal and who has a strange proclivity for big strong men in builders’ boots and flirts outrageously with them, only to have them howling in pain after they have taken up her invitation to tickle her tummy and received a vicious recreational clawing by way of thanks.

The Brown Dog is a gastro pub in Little Chelsea, the most western part of Barnes, hidden away in a tiny side street of this pretty little area with tiny two up two down railway cottages bedecked in summer with abundant flower baskets and window boxes, a proper chocolate box idyll.

After a decade of wrinkling my nose and dissing it at every opportunity, the lovely husband and I almost reluctantly took ourselves off there one damp summer’s evening, when most appropriately, it was raining cats and dogs.

Okay, if I want to be completely honest about the experience, I guess I need to mention that the uncushioned pew church chairs are perhaps a bit hard but when you experience quite such sensory pleasure, all served up in a lovely environment which includes such commendable little touches as proper starched white linen napkins, the slightly sore derriere pales into insignificance.

Whether you are the owner of a lovable pooch or of a catty bundle of wickedness, you will not regret eating here; it’s the cat’s whiskers or, as we say in these parts, it’s the dog’s bollocks!

Also, should their verdict be the result of multiple visits rather than one quick meal (often, with new restaurants, when the paint's barely dry on the feature wall)?

This week, a rare instance of a new restaurant that feels old, which I visited twice before scoring.

The delicious array of pâtés and pickles – chicken liver, mushroom and chestnut, smoked fish, and ribbons of just-soused heritage carrots, gherkins – with some good soda bread and a pitcher of wine has my name on it for a repeat visit for a New Year's catch-up with my local girlfriends.

If I'd been the one to breathe new life into this tired old pub, I'd put thick velvet curtains round the door and at the windows – the dining-room can feel a little chilly away from the fire.

Tucked down a small residential road, The Brown Dog is one of those rare operations that takes a small pub and turns it into a big offering.

From its eccentrically appointed back yard to the calming interior, the place certainly comes alive in the summer.

Extremely accomplished in its execution of all its offerings, the barbecues here are a cut above most others in town.

The summer signature dish is barbecued lobster, turned to perfection, and possibly the best value shellfish in London at £18.

The pub's cask beers are always very well kept; current incumbent is Westerham's Grasshopper (£3.20), kept company by a rotating seasonal brew, often from lovely local brewery, Twickenham Fine Ales.

Little changes at this gastropub in the backstreets of Barnes: from the cordial welcome to the pleasing decor to the well-judged menu.

Simplicity is key to the shortish menu, which makes a virtue out of unfussy seasonal dishes that require minimal preparation and have wide appeal – an approach other pubs could emulate.

So you’ll find oysters, a half pint of prawns, dressed crab, steaks and straightforward fish dishes, with plenty of salads and chips.

A succulent burger with fluffy chips, and leek and mushroom pie with smooth mash and crisp french beans – both hit the spot.

Design and vibe are similar to the Brown Dog’s, but turned up a notch, so the upstairs restaurant sports white tablecloths and a fancier menu.
