Awesome Thai

Beautifully executed cooking is the hallmark of this new Thai restaurant, situated opposite the old Olympic Studios on Church Road in Barnes.

It's the first restaurant opening for its owners who have been working in luxury hotel restaurants prior to starting this new venture.

For little more than the price of the average Thai take-away you get fresh and well-sourced ingredients, clear flavours and a very high level of friendly service.

After my dinner partner arrived 20 minutes late and by which point I had devoured all the Thai crackers and glass of wine, a small prawn toast basted in lots of sweet chilli sauce arrived at the table, it was nice but maybe needed a bit more prawn, something so small really needs to stand out.

I decided to go for the ‘Awesome Platter’ which showed off a selection of its appetisers, Nor mai farang hor bacon (asparagus wrapped in bacon), Thai satay kai (grilled chicken marinated in satay sauce with a cucumber relish), tod man pla (Thai fish cakes served with special house sauce) and koong hom pha (deep fried marinated prawns in pastry served with a sweet chilli sauce).

I’ve never been a big fan of Thai fishcakes, they are normally light, tasteless and very chewy, but not here, juicy, slightly sweet and have a delicious potent lemon grass flavour, a lovely change to the usual offerings in most Thai restaurants.

Grilled marinated king prawns with grilled vegetables and a sweet chilli sauce.

The prawns were juicy, meaty and had a lovely smokiness running through them, everything you could want, the vegetables were also cooked to perfection and had a lovely crunch.

The table was heaving with an array of dishes including a chicken and aubergine curry, the most delicately cooked sea bass in a light batter, stir fried vegetables with just the right amount of crunch, a slow cooked fragrant beef dish and sticky rice.

We also ordered a Pad Thai as this is my daughter's favourite dish.

Most of the dishes were very good but the service from the senior staff was excellent.

In terms of food, the tuna tarta wasn't as good as expected, the vegetarian green curry was too watery and the pad thai was a little too sweet and lacked flavour.

The waitress was very grumpy while serving and was rude every time we asked for an extra bowl etc The green curry and spicy noodles were good but the service made the experience below par for us.
