Barnes, in west London, just doesn’t feel like it’s part of a metropolis.
The locals are similarly cossetting.
There’s a sense of community here, epitomised by the Barnes Community Association, which raises money for local causes that keep the village spirit intact.
Some of the funds that the association raises support local businesses; a survey in 2014 found that Barnes has the highest concentration of independent shops in Britain.
So far, so “Midsomer-on-Thames” (although you’re unlikely to find any bodies here – Barnes has one of the lowest crime rates in London).
