As Barnes’ Alma Café celebrates its first birthday, Sophie Farrah pops in for a spot of brunch Nothing beats a good brunch in my opinion.
At the weekend I braved Storm Brian and meandered along Barnes’ pretty high street, past the duck pond and the church, and when I got to the end I took a right because tucked around the corner on Rock’s Lane is the pretty Alma Café, serving up breakfast, brunch and lunch.
There’s pancakes, all sorts of eggs, fresh fruit, pastries, the obligatory Avocado Toast with Chilli and Lime mixed with a few more unusual options too such as Wild Mushroom Ragu on Toast, as well as a mouth watering selection of freshly made juices and nutritious smoothies.
The bright purple chilled smoothie base was refreshing and delightfully fruity, whilst the toasted coconuts and Alma’s seriously tasty homemade granola gave it a sweet, satisfying crunch.
I have to be honest and say was that it wasn’t the greatest looking dish (imagine a rather fleshy pink substance…), but what it lacked in looks it made up for in flavour; the zingy taste of ripe vine tomato running through the creamy scrambled egg was absolutely delicious – it tasted light and fresh but indulgent at the same.
This is why Alma Cafe in Barnes is the perfect spot for your chilled ...

Just a mile from Hammersmith Bridge, in the surprisingly idyllic village of Barnes (considering its proximity to central London), is Alma Café.
I’d heard great things about the smoothies at Alma, and the Berry Bingo (apple, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry) did not disappoint.
There are lots of things like that which point to Alma being ideal for health bods – there’s even a smoothie called Gym Bunny – but the cakes are there ready and waiting for indulging too.
Sadly, I was stuffed from my eggs florentine – but I’d go back just to try the cakes another time!

food menu
Full disclosure though - my husband and I trialed a massive brunch there to celebrate Alma’s first birthday and new menu – and chose not to take any of the kids, because sometimes you need to get through a meal without cutting up someone’s toast or wiping a smoothie from the floor.
So we ate at Alma’s by ourselves and willfully ignored the full children’s menu, sat in amongst a few quiet mums and babies, grinning at each other like we really need to get out more.
The space is full of natural light and stylish little details like potted succulents, hanging 70’s houseplants, New York tiles, deco-esque brass wall lights and where we sat, a little cushioned banquette tucked away in a corner – perfect for the parent who just wants to feed everyone without annoying anyone else.
The counter is full of glorious multi-coloured salads in a fresh Middle Eastern Ottolenghi-style and as lunch took over from brunch, meat, fish and pasta dishes come out on display.
My husband went for the full English, and I, more modestly, ordered the avocado and feta on toast.
