The real stars here, though, are the cocktails: a rotating list from the crew behind Hawskmoor and Foxlow.

Leaving the bar to those of us who want to get stuck into some more cocktails.

There’s a new cocktail bar beneath the Balham branch of (basically) everyone’s favourite restaurant, Foxlow.

As we’ve come to expect from Will Beckett and Huw Gott, it’s the perfect combination of friendly neighbourhood space and trendy new spot... The drinks menu, of 10 ever-changing cocktails, is what gives The Owl its edge.

Featuring creatively-crafted tipples such as the Tom and Jerez – gin, lemon, dry sherry pear & almond – and, our personal favourite, La Pomme Qui Rit – Calvados, peach, pear, porter & Pont l’Evêque (yes, that’s a cheese garnish) – we’ll be making sure to try the whole lot.

Foxlow has an MO — being the go-to bistro in wealthy residential neighbourhoods like Balham and Chiswick (the steaks here usually come with a side of buggies).

So this Hawksmoor spin-off turning up in Soho is a surprise, but a thoroughly good one.

Doesn't matter which branch you pick when it comes to the food: the menu's a confident combination of steakhouse classics — like the parmesan-crusted mac'n'cheese and our perfectly-rare hanger steak — and more interesting flourishes.

Don't miss the crackers topped with anchovies and goat's butter, or the fried chicken sandwich, a behemoth even by Foxlow's generous standards.

This makes it the right setting to tackle their strong cocktail menu — the Old Cuban's rum, lime and champagne is the ideal summery foil for the sun-flooded dining room.

value   food

Foxlow Balham | South London Restaurant Balham is listed in the Domesday Book – the surveyors totalled up the full net worth of all the homes, fields, livestock, and other assets in the entire village.

UPSTAIRS Menu-wise, there’s still steak making an apprearance, but its very much as a adjunct to their main offerings (and, frankly, a necessary part of most British restaurant menus).

A standalone cocktail bar in its own right, it’s also where you’ll find yourself if you have an hour to casually assassinate before or after your meal.

There was a creamy white-bean houmous, served with a green chilli-and-garlic ‘harissa’ and thick slices of good bread.

Also good was a mashed-up burrata on toast with the clean, green notes of a sorrel salsa verde, and a salad of baby kale and beetroot chunks teamed with mandolined-thin slices of fresh horseradish.

But the chicken burger – ordered in a panic because our waiter had neglected to mention that they were out of the beef burgers – was fairly pedestrian, and the biggest disappointment of the lot.

At the original Foxlow, service is exceptional: the perfect balance of chumminess and professionalism.

But on our visit to this latest Foxlow, our waiter regularly crossed the line into overfamiliarity, and was more interested in being a full-of-catchphrases quipster than in properly describing the menu.
